Station 11: Jesus dies

Station 11: Jesus dies

In the middle of the day darkness falls, Jesus cries out “my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, and “I am thirsty”, and “it is finished”, and “Father, into your hands I commend your spirit”. Jesus’ whole body, mind, emotions, and spirit are being torn apart, and the earth and the elements echo this as he breathes his last, “at that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook and the rocks split. The tomb broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life”. The physical and the metaphysical, the material and the spiritual were, at that moment, changed forever.

prayer

Lord Jesus, your body hung on the tree of shame,
you died in the bleakest of circumstances,
give courage to those who die at the hands of others
and illumine our darkness with your glorious presence.

Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.

Amen
