Station 12: his body laid in the tomb
Jesus was taken down and prepared for burial quickly so as to avoid being left over the Sabbath. Gloom gathered around the disciples and the women, and yet there is a glimmer of hope, in both Jesus’ and Jonah’s words: “for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth”. Here in the ground, Christianity started to grow.

Lord Jesus, you become nothing for us,
you were laid in a cold and dark tomb, hidden from sight,
be with all who suffer and die in secret
and those who feel worthless in the eyes of the world.
Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.
