Station 2: the agony in the garden

Station 2: the agony in the garden

After supper, they leave the city and retire to the olive groves in the east. As the disciples sleep, Jesus finds himself restless and alone, facing the truth of what is about to come - as it says in Deuteronomy “anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse”. This immediate spiritual agony causes him to fall to the ground and cry out, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done”.

prayer

Lord Jesus, in entering that garden you faced the agony of impending death,
be with those who share that agony and face death unwillingly today.
You shared our fear and weakness,
give us strength that we may say, “your will be done”.

Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.

Amen
