Station 3: the arrest
Judas gives Jesus away, a crowd of armed people close in on Jesus. In the tussle, the hot-headed Peter lashes out cutting off the high priest’s servant’s ear. Jesus rebukes him. In this “scandal of divine passion” Jesus' love overrides the instinct to cut and run, showing that love can reach out beyond the threat of violence and control.

Lord Jesus, you were betrayed by a kiss,
your friendship was thrown back at you for mere silver.
Be with those who are in places where there is no trust,
where families are torn apart by temptation,
and help us to reach out in love.
Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.
