Station 8: the flagellation
The Sentence is passed. Pilate washes his hands. Jesus is subjected to a horrific sequence of physical torture and suffering, one that we can hardly imagine. Through these events a bloody picture is painted that the prophets had seen a thousand years previously, the “man of sorrows”, who was “pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities”.

Lord Jesus, you faced barbaric punishment and unbearable abuse.
Be with those who face torture and mockery in our world today,
and help us fight such injustice in the world.
Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.
